I love the cute little mermaids on this cake. My daughter wanted a mermaid cake and I wanted to do something different than Ariel. I was inspired by a really similar cake by Hello Naomi. She’s my cake idol, she’s amazing. I made the mermaids out of fondant, and the star fish I shaped out of gum paste. The mermaids were a little heavier than I thought they’d be so they pulled on the buttercream a little bit, you can see the cracking on the bottom one….oh well. Sorry about the bad pictures….the food processor and the outlet make a great backdrop!
This cake was so special. I had the privilege of making this cake for a much deserving little boy through the Icing Smiles program (www.icingsmiles.org). This is an amazing charity that provides cakes to families impacted by critically ill children. If you bake/decorate cakes and would like to know more about volunteering I would encourage you to check out their website, it’s an awesome cause!! I have to admit, even though I have little kids I had never seen an episode of Yo Gabba Gabba so I had to do a little research before I made this one…..I was really happy with the result though. Everything on the cake is edible, the eyes are made of marshmallow fondant and the red spikes and the robot ears are made of gum paste. This was the first time I had ever used pearl dust to make a metallic finish on anything. I formed the robot ears out of gum paste that I had dyed grey, and then I mixed the silver pearl dust with some clear vanilla extract to form a paint and just used a small paintbrush to apply it. You can get some great little cake decorating brushes at Michael’s…..that’s typically where I get all of my cake supplies. Sorry I didn’t get a closer picture of the ears so you could see it but it really is cute and worth doing!
This was a rice krispie treat cake I made for a friend’s daughter’s 1st birthday. I love how fun and colorful this one is. Complete with a smash cake and some extra bars just incase. All of the decorations on this one were made of marshmallow fondant except the sun’s rays and the “gum balls”, which were made of gum paste. My arms got a workout on this one dying the fondant and gum paste so many different colors!
This cake was for a girl’s 1st birthday….I love the colors and the simplicity of stripes and polka dots. All of the decorations for this cake were made of fondant except the flowers and the number 1’s….those were gum paste. If you enjoy cake making and you’ve never worked with gum paste you’ve got to try it! It’s a lot like fondant but it hardens so you can make a number or something, stick some toothpicks into the bottom of it and put it right on top of your cake, so cute! You can find it ready made or as a powder that you just add water and powdered sugar to (that’s how I get it). You can find it at your local craft store.
I also just love the little tutu smash cake….it’s super easy to make your own tutu for something like that. I think I just found a tutorial on Pinterest or Youtube on how to do it.
I’m finally getting another cake up on the blog! Goodness, time goes by so fast. I made this cake in June for my cousin’s wedding. We came up with the idea by combining a few different ones we liked. I think my favorite thing about this cake is the alternating single/double layers. I also really like the borders….those took a little longer than I expected but I really like the way they turned out.
My sister’s wedding cake. I looked at about a million pictures of cherry blossom tree cakes and just loved one that I found with the branches painted on instead of using fondant (thankfully that was the one my sister loved too). It was quite difficult to “paint” on buttercream, but I just love the way it turned out. The other hard part was forming each and every flower out of gum paste…..I had never even worked with gum paste before this cake so it took me a while. This was by far the hardest cake I’ve done to date, but definitely my favorite 🙂 Thanks for trusting me to make your cake Kels 🙂
The groom’s cake. My sister’s husband is a huge TOM’S fan, so we had to do it. I was so relieved when they turned out good!!
This is definitely one of my favorite cakes. I got the idea from http://www.pinkcakebox.com. I love the colors and it was the first time I ever put numbers on the top. Every thing on this cake, even the pumpkins, are edible. Sorry about the poor picture quality! Hoping to get some better pictures of it soon!
This was a ‘going away’ cake I made for my sister and brother-in-law. They are both into the modern look and I got the circles idea from some bedding. It may have looked a little better with white white icing instead of ivory, but I still thought it was pretty cool. I like the balls in between the cakes, that was the first time I had tried anything like that.
